First Generation

1. William1 Miles birth date unknown. We know little about William before his marriage. Some researchers that suggest his father was Benjamin Mills/Miles of Exeter, Massachusetts. However, there seems to be a great deal of conflict in birthdates and death dates in their work. About the same time that William was in Oyster River, New Hampshire, there were other property owners named John and Thomas Mighil. The texts indicate that this surname was pronounced Miles. It could be that William is descended from this family. Records in Canterbury indicate he came from Dover, New Hampshire. William died January 1, 1761 in Canterbury, Province of New Hampshire.(1)

He married Hannah Heath in Oyster River Parish, Town of Dover, Province of New Hampshire, March 15, 1719.(2) They were married by the Reverend Hugh Adams. Reverend Adams was the first minister to permanently settle in the Oyster River area that would eventually become Durham. He was ordained in the Congregationalist Church. In his register, he noted "The Lord be merciful to them."

At the time of their marriage, New Hampshire had been an independent province for 40 years, having separated from Massachusetts in 1680. Most of the settlement was in the southern and eastern parts of the province, which had been divided up into four towns, including Dover. About 1720, settlements began to push westward with a "second tier" of towns as new charters were granted and new immigrants were coming to America from Great Britain. Much of the settlement was happening in the Merrimack Valley, which would eventually spark troubles with the Indians that lived along the river.

28. Mastain Morrill5 Miles (Archelaus4, Archelaus3, Josiah2, William1) was born in Sheffield, Caledonia County, Vermont August 20, 1797.(20) Mastain's given name has been spelled and transcribed every way possible in the public records, including Mastin, Martin, and Masten. On the most primary of records, where he would have likely written his name, it is spelled Mastain. This is also how it is spelled on his tombstone.

There is some uncertainty about Mastain's middle name. The only record of it appears on the death certificate of his son, John Miles. The handwriting spells Moral, a phonetic spelling of Morrell. From reviewing records, there were prominent associates of Mastain's father in Vermont at the time of his birth with the surname Morrell. Mastain may well have been named for them as a sign of respect. Another possibility is that a Mary Morrell married a man named Miles in Canterbury, New Hampshire. This may have been the marriage of Mastain's grandfather, Archelaus.

Mastain died October 12, 1863 in Owatonna, Steele County, Minnesota, at 66 years of age.(21) His body was interred in Cannon City, Rice County, Minnesota, at Cannon City Cemetery.(22)

He married Jane Holt in Thompson, Windham County, Connecticut, December 29, 1844.(34) In the History of Bremer County, Jane's maiden name is incorrectly printed as Hall. TOOK HIS OWN LIFE

With horse’s halter George S. Norton of this city hangs himself. Suicide at home of his daughter---Mrs. A. C. Bean of Forest Township--occurred at four Tuesday.

Under the delusion that he had become useless and helpless, George S. Norton, of this city, aged 76 years, committed suicide yesterday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. C. Bean, near Fox Lake in the township of Forest.

Mr. Norton went out to visit his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Bean, Thursday, June 8. He remarked when he went there that if he liked it, he should never come back. The words indicate that he had meditated self-destruction for some time.

Uses Halter. Between 3:30 and 4 Tuesday afternoon Mr. Norton went into the barn. He took the halter off the manger which was about two and a half feet high, and leaving his cane beside the manger, feebly climbed upon it.

Mr. Norton arranged the halter over the timber above the manger, and making one slip knot in it, he put the noose around his neck. Then he jumped from the manger to the floor, and into eternity.

Mr. Bean Finds the Body. Mr. Bean found the body a few minutes after 4 o’clock. Mr. Norton’s feet just touched the floor. Life was extinct, and had evidently just become so.

Sheriff Geiger and Coroner D. W. Ray of this city were immediately called to Mr. Bean’s residence. They left about 7 o’clock last evening. The means of death were obvious and no inquest was deemed necessary.

Cause of Suicide Apparently Mr. Norton had no cause for suicide. While not wealthy, he had a good home on Seventh Street in this city, west of the car tracks, and he was in receipt of a pension from the government that insured him from want the rest of his days. He was also father of three children, Ed. Norton, janitor of the post office in this city, Frank of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Bean of Forest. Mrs. Norton, his wife, was in Waverly, Ia., when the fatality occurred.

Mr. Norton was, however, subject to bad spells, when physical agony drove him nearly insane. He had violent headaches, and one of his eyes was so badly affected as to have withered in his head.

These causes and the feeling that he was now useless, undoubtedly drove Mr. Norton to taking a life that had grown a burden. Idleness was to Mr. Norton a greater calamity than to the average person, for he was of an unusually industrious disposition and he felt the want of work greatly.

Mr. Norton was civil war veteran, and a man held in general esteem. He had been for many years a teamster in this city.

Mr. Norton was a member of Co. M, First Minnesota Heavy Artillery, and was sergeant in his company.

The News has caused a general shock among his friends, who were numerous in Faribault.
